Unsweetened Chai is for those who love the true essence of chai — rich tea and warming spices — without sweetness. Crafted by hand in small batches, this concentrate is bold, clean and unapologetically honest: real spices, organic black tea, and nothing else.
A generous amount of crushed Fiji ginger is simmered slowly with freshly-ground cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and black peppercorns. The mixture is then allowed to steep overnight. After sieving our the coarse fibre, we add a strong brew of organic black tea and bottle it immediately. The result is a chai that’s bright on the nose, grounded on the palate, and beautifully expressive without relying on sugar.

We steep our Unsweetened Chai slowly so each spice can release its full character. There’s no sugar to mask or mute the flavours, just tea and spice married beautifully, The result is a chai that delivers energy and warmth.
This is chai for spice lovers, traditionalists and anyone who enjoys tea that speaks for itself. Perfect when you want depth without sweetness.
Serve it simply: pour 30 ml of concentrate into 220 ml hot water or milk and stir. Adjust to taste, more chai for a punchier cup, or a smoother sip when you want something gentler. Try it with just hot water, or even chilled over ice with a splash of milk.

Our concentrates & syrups are made here in Auckland. We work with Aromatics in Takanini, using recipes developed originally in Hakanoa Street in Grey Lynn.
All Hakanoa products are pasteurised and safe to be stored at room temperature unopened. Syrups can be stored for 3 years and gingers beers for 2 years before their flavours start to fade. Best in a dark cool cupboard if you have one.
All Hakanoa products are preservative-free. Our concentrates must be refrigerated after opening and used within 3 months.
